State Senator Michael Noland has long been committed to his community and to public service. A lifelong resident of Illinois and a 30-year resident of Elgin, he can relate to all the things that make this state great. He grew up in a central Illinois farming community and moved to Elgin with his family as a teenager. Because his family sometimes struggled to put food on the table, Noland began shining shoes to bring in extra money at the age of 8. As a teenager, he worked at a local grocery store.

Upon high school graduation, he joined the Navy, serving with the 4th Marine Division at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital. While on active duty, he earned the National Defense Medal, the Navy Marksman rating, the Good Conduct Badge and letters of Commendation and Appreciation for serving stateside during the Gulf War. In his spare time, he attended community college.

After he left the Navy, he worked as a chauffeur to put himself through college. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois Chicago, his law degree from John Marshall Law School and his MBA from UIC. He then served two years as an attorney in the Kane County Public Defender’s Office before opening his own legal practice, engaging in a great deal of pro bono advocacy work.

In 2006, he decided to give back to the community that had supported him by running for the Illinois State Senate. As a newly elected member of the Illinois General Assembly, Noland turned his attention to economic development, government reform, environmental issues (particularly the green technology industry) and stamping out hunger. As chair of the Senate Criminal Law Committee, he has used his courtroom experience to improve public safety.

Noland and his wife, Veronica, reside on the northeast side of Elgin with their two children. In 2016 he retired from the Senate and returned to Elgin to focus on his law career.
